We had a wood-burning kitchen stove, with a hot water reservoir - I loved to sit on its cover on long winter evenings and read, forgetting the world around me.
When I was a kid and everyone else was out playing baseball or doing some sort of mayhem, I would most often be walking down Argyle Street with a load of Library books in my arms, or found in some corner of the house, reading them.
There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.
