My Saturday Snapshot






















I received a terrific book (t.y.L.i.I.) for my birthday in December, and I've finally gotten around to reading it.
How To Live or A Life of Montaigne: In One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer.
That's quite the subtitle, I know.
Montaigne was a French philosopher/essayist of the 16th Century, and this biography by Sarah Bakewell explores his life and ideas. For Montaigne, learning to live "appropriately" (a propos) is the "great and glorious masterpiece" of human life.
I took this photo with my little statue of Rodin's Thinker, looking on -- as this is most exemplary of my own posture and attitude as I turn these pages.

    That's quite a book! I like the concept of 'living appropriately.' It's more realistic and sustainable than striving for a 'best life' kind of thing.

    That sounds an intriguing book. I'm trying to learn more about Paris, France and famous French folks (although I've been starting with Joan of Arc). It sure is some subtitle. I'm also impressed that you read your present book. For some reason I never seem to get around to reading the books I get as presents, and it drives my husband crazy- and he won't buy me books any more!

    To me it looks like a couch in the background, with the statue next to it, which then makes the book look enormous. :) It sure does seem like a deep thinking book, so a very appropriate setup of the photo.

    The color of this photo is quite amazing. And also amazing is the fact that not five minutes before visiting you, I heard of this book for the first time. It's fate...I must now read it in 2012!

    Like the snap. How'd you get everything so goldeny-y? I got the books last year not long after it came out but just couldn't fit it in to my reading. I am hoping to do it this year since I love Montaigne's essays.
