Splash du Jour: Thursday

I think us here to wonder, myself. To wonder. To ast. And that in wondering bout the big things and asting bout the big things, you learn about the little ones, almost by accident. But you never know nothing more about the big things than you start out with. The more I wonder, he say, the more I love.
And people start to love you back, I bet, I say.

They do, he say, surprise.

-- Alice Walker, The Color Purple

Have a great Thursday!

I have lived South of the Mason-Dixon Line quite some time, yet never came across a verb like "ast". I don't remember the word "ast", I must have missread it as "ask", way back when I read the book.
Her sentiments are right, though.

My great-grandma lived in Arkansas and said "ast" as she only achieved a 7th grade education before she married and had the first of her 13 children. "Ax" seems to be the unfortunate pronunciation these days. It makes me want to grind my teeth to nubs and then just smack them-preferably with an unabridged dictionary turned to the entry "axe".
